Vehicular traffic was disrupted on NH-71 in Rohtak district of Haryana on Tuesday after clashes between supporters of two religious bodies spilled onto the streets. Violence began when members of the Arya Samaj objected to the re-opening of the controversial Satlok Ashram which had been sealed by the district administration in 2006.
The decision had then been taken after a similar clash between the two sects had resulted in the death of a youth and had left 50 people injured.
A few days ago,the district administration handed over the possession of the controversial ashram to its followers allowing them to continue . This led to resentment among the Arya Samaj members who attacked the Ashram followers on Tuesday.
Police were then called to control the situation and had to resort to firing tear gas shells to disperse the mob. The Samaj supporters then blocked the highway and the disruption continued till late in the night.
There has been heavy police deployment to avert any further clashes with the Rohtak and Jhajjar police surrounding the ashram. The preacher of Satlok Ashram had earned the ire of the people in the region due to his controversial views on the Arya Samaj. The entire belt is a Samaj stronghold.
