In the wake of the killing of a Hindi-speaking businessman and his daughter by suspected ULFA militants in Tinsukia, the Assam government has shunted out local SP Arnab Deka and posted Karbi Anglong SP Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta in his place. The move comes at a time when protests over the killings continued to disrupt normal life in the district for the second consecutive day.

The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the two persons — Nandalal Shah and his daughter Kajol. It has also directed security forces to go all out against the ULFA militants.

Meanwhile, ULFA(I) faction leader Paresh Barua on Thursday claimed that his outfit was not responsible for Tuesday’s attack. Speaking to some local television news channels, Barua demanded an apology from organisations that had condemned his faction for the incident.
