Almost three-fourth of the candidates who tested their electoral fortunes in the recent MCD elections forfeited their security deposit with independents topping the list.
Out of the 2,423 candidates in the fray in the April 15 elections to three Municipal Corporations of Delhi,1,783 could not even manage to secure the minimum number of votes that is required to reclaim the security deposit.
Not only independents lost their money,even candidates from bigger parties like the BJP,which swept the polls,and the Congress failed to secure the deposit money,which they pay while filing nomination.
26 of the 271 candidates of the Congress lost their security deposit,while the number in the BJP was a little less at 18. The BJP contested in all 272 wards in the three municipal corporations.
Only 54 of the total 1174 Independent candidates are eligible to get their security deposit with 1120 nominees having lost the amount.
203 candidates of BSP,who won 15 wards in all three Corporations,lost the security deposit,while SP candidates were able to manage the minimum votes in only 6 wards. The party contested in 107 wards,won 2 and lost security deposit in 101 segments.
IUML,Shiv Sena,JD(S),Forward Bloc and CPI lost security deposit in all 3,16,13,9 and 18 wards they contested respectively. CPI(M) lost security deposit in 7 of the 8 wards it contested.
