Three children burned alive as house goes up in flames

Three siblings, all between six and three years old, were burned alive after their house went up in flames just before 10 pm Wednesday at the Mizoram-Assam boundary town of Vairengte.

Their parents were both away at the time — locals said their mother, 32-year-old Lalrammawii was outside with the youngest child, an infant, at the time, looking for rice to cook for Christmas Day as the family had none to eat.

The father, 33-year-old Sanga, was away in another town.

Police said the mother had left a kerosene lamp alight when she stepped out of the house, and that this seemed to have fallen off and set the house on fire.

The main door of the thatch house was already burning when the eldest child jumped out of the window, already burned himself. His three younger siblings – Nguri (6), Lalpekhlua (4) and Jonathan (3) – could not escape and were burned alive.
