Twelve people were reported killed after a building in Thane (west) collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday. Seven people were injured in the incident. The building, Krishna Niwas, in B Cabin area close to Thane railway station had its third floor occupied by five families. Two other floors were vacant and the ground floor had commercial establishments.

Officials said the building came crashing down around 2:00 am. Local residents informed the fire brigade and Thane police. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was contacted, and a team of 50 NDRf personnel and two sniffer dogs reached the spot.thane building collapse, thane building collapse reason, mumbai thane building collapse, building collapse in thane today, building collapse in thane mumbai, reason for building collapse in thane, building collapse near thane, Mumbai News Today, Thane News Today, Mumbai latest news“We received the call about the collapse around 2:50, and our team left our base in Andheri for Thane at 3:20. They reached the site around 4:00 am, and commenced work,” said Alok Awasthy, NDRF Commandant.

“We saved 15 residents. Two people were saved because our dogs sniffed them out,” Inspector Parth Sen, NDRF added. NDRF officials said it was a “pancake” collapse, in which layers of debris were piled one over the other.

“In a pancake collapse, there are spaces between debris where victims are trapped alive. The challenge in such cases is two fold. One is to get to them as soon as possible, the second is to extricate them safely,” said Deputy Commandant Sachidanand Gawade, who heads the Mumbai unit of the NDRF.

Gawade said a wide road outside the building helped in the rescue efforts as access was not impeded.

Dr Kempi Patil, Thane civil surgeon, said four of the seven injured have been discharged.

“We are making inquiries. No FIR has been registered in the matter yet,” said Senior Police Inspector M D Survase, Naupada police station.
