The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today re-elected Anurag Thakur as joint secretary of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA),in an apparent rebuff to the state government’s attempt to crack down on the HPCA president and BJP MP.
Ahead of the BCCI annual general meeting in Chennai,Registrar Cooperatives R D Nazeem had written a strongly worded letter to the organisation regarding “irregularities” committed by the HPCA and a show cause notice that had been served on the cricket body.
The Registrar,according to directives of the Himachal Pradesh High Court,is slated to hear the HPCA plea against the notice on Monday.
Along with the showcause notice under Section 41 of the HP Societies (Registration) Act,the Registrar had also passed orders directing HPCA not to pass any resolution or make any expenditure or banking transactions concerning its affairs without written approval of the Additional Deputy Commissioner Kangra.
The re-election of Thakur shows the BCCI had declined to take cognizance of the Registrar’s letter,which was seen as an attempt to stall the cricket body from showing any favour to Thakur.
Thakur,son of former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and national president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha,was elected joint secretary of BCCI in September 2011. It was because of his position in the body that he managed to get a one-day international cricket match allotted to Himachal Pradesh for the Dharamsala stadium.
Regarding his election,Thakur said,“I am honoured to have been reappointed joint secretary. I have enjoyed my term and look forward to developing the achievements of BCCI further.”
“As joint secretary of BCCI,Thakur has done a remarkable job promoting and providing international exposure to cricketers at the junior level. Today,our teams like U-19 and Indian A face international teams in India and abroad and are doing relatively well,” said Mohit Sood,HPCA spokesperson.
