Telangana: SIMI activists were aggressive and abusive, say police after encounter

The entire incident occurred at the border of Warangal-Nalgonda districts.

The encounter scene, where the five alleged SIMI activists were shot dead on Tuesday morning, is like no other. A brand new Eicher mini-bus with plastic covers on some seats still intact, shattered window glasses including the rear exit, blood stains all over, and a lifeless bearded man with a rifle in his hands and handcuffs dangling on right wrist. Around him are four other bodies lying on the seats in various positions. And, unlike other encounters which happen at remote locations late night or early morning, this encounter happened on the side of a busy highway at 10 am.

As traffic jammed at the encounter site on the Hyderabad-Warangal National Highway 202 (originally NH-163), the bus drove away from Pemburti to Jangaon Government Hospital for post-mortem. The policemen waited for two hours to shift the bodies inside, while it was being decided under which district’s jurisdiction the incident occurred as they waited for a team of doctors to arrive from Warangal and Hyderabad. Finally, it was decided to conduct the post-mortem at the Jangaon Hospital only.

WARANGAL

The father of one of the slain SIMI activist, Vikaruddin Ahmed, is known to police but he chose not to go to the hospital to claim his body. Vikaruddin Ahmed is a former SIMI activist and member of the radical social outfit Darsgah Jehad O Shahadat (DJS). He had in the past shot and killed two policemen in Hyderabad. When Vikaruddin and four of his associates boarded the bus belonging to Warangal Rural Police, the SIMI activists must have had some foreboding. According to Reserve Sub-Inspector Uday Bhaskar, who was incharge of the 17-men police escort, Vikaruddin was in a foul mood and started spitting at him and abusing other policemen as soon as he boarded the bus.

According to Bhaskar, the four others were also in an aggressive mood spitting in the bus and glaring at the cops. When the firing started in the bus, a few vehicles apparently slowed down on the highway after hearing the noise, but did not see anything amiss and drove away. Once cops got out, wireless sets crackled and phone calls were made to their seniors, the news spread.

Hundreds of curious onlookers gathered at the hospital to have a look at the slain men.
