Two policemen were killed when unidentified persons Thursday opened fire at a search party near Suryapet on Hyderabad-Vijayawada NH 5. Police are now trying to ascertain whether the two gunmen have any links with the shooting at an astrologer in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Constable K Lingaiah and home guard P Mahesh Kumar died on spot, while Suryapet Circle Inspector Y Moghaliah and another home guard were injured in the firing. The team was conducting a search at Suryapet bus station after receiving inputs that dacoits were using bus services to travel between Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Police said the CI noticed two persons who appeared suspicious and questioned them. They showed voter ID cards, which had Sundergarh, Orissa, as their home town. The policemen were not convinced and when they were about to check their luggage, the suspected dacoits took out country-made guns and fired. They soon fled the spot.
