A Punjab government school teacher was on Thursday awarded life sentence for raping a minor Dalit student of his school. Sangrur Additional Sessions Judge Tejwinder Singh held Gurjant Singh a resident of Natha Patti in Namol guilty of raping the 13-year-old girl.
The incident took place on December 31,2012 when the victim,a Class VIII student was called by Gurjant at his house to evaluate her mathematics practical work. Alone at home,he raped her and threatened the girl with dire consequences in case she told anyone of the incident. The girl kept quiet for some time but finally narrated the incident to her parents, who are daily wagers.
A case was registered on February 2,this year under sections 376 and 506 of the IPC,Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act-2012 and SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-1989 at Cheema police station. Gurjant, who has been teaching in the school since 1995,is married and has a daughter and a son.
The accused does not warrant even least sympathy from the court with regard to the quantum of sentence as his conduct is revolting to the judicial conscience. He turns out to be wolf. The accused deserves no mercy, the court said.
Disposing of the case in less than a month,Judge Tejwinder Singh said: It is one of the case where a pious and sacred relationship (of teacher and pupil) has been ravished, trust betrayed and social values impaired… Needless to say,it is a very serious matter….
Sexual violence is a crime against basic human rights and is also violative of the victims most cherished of the fundamental rights, namely, the Right to Life contained in Article 21 of the Constitution, the judge added.
