Eight days after a leading lawyer in Mangaldoi, northern Assam was brutally murdered, the state government on Friday transferred the Superintendent of Police (SP) on charges of “gross negligence and indifferent attitude”.
An official statement issued by the state government said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi himself gave orders for transfer of Darrang SP GV Siva Prasad and placing Sashi Kanta Das, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mangaldai police station, under suspension after the murder of leading advocate and businessman Binoy Kumar Ghosh.
While Ghosh (84) was murdered by a group of dacoits inside his residence in Mangaldoi town on August 29, the chief minister’s orders said action was taken against the two officers owing to the gross negligence and indifferent attitude of the concerned police officials.
The residence of Ghosh is just about 100 metres from the Mangaldoi police station. Reports said a gang of dacoits numbering close to 20 broke into the lawyer’s house, gagged him, and looted cash, ornaments and other valuables.
While Ghosh initially pleaded to be spared of his life, a commotion with one of the dacoits ultimately led to him being stabbed to death, local media reports quoting his wife had said.
Police have so far arrested only one of the suspects.
