Haryana Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala on Wednesday trounced veterans like INLD chief and Leader of the Opposition Om Prakash Chautala and former finance minister Sampat Singh to win the best legislator award for 2012-13.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda proposed Surjewalas name from among the nine legislators nominated for the award. A seven-member committee headed by Speaker Kuldeep Sharma chose him for the honour that contains a cash award of Rs 1 lakh,a trophy and a certificate.
A total of nine MLAs Chautala,Sampat Singh,B B Batra,Ram Pal Majra,Bahadur Singh,Aftab Ahmed,Geeta Bhukkal and Ram Kishan Gujjar were nominated for the award.
The INLD,however, questioned the selection process. State party president Ashok Arora, who was also a member of the committee which selected the winner, said: This is a farce and the whole exercise was to find a favourite MLA for the award. He added that the ruling party ruled out his contention by saying that there was no ban on giving the award to a minister.
Since the award was being given for the first time, many MLAs were not aware of it. So,they should have been given time to send their requests… The government should have tried to keep the process transparent and credible by instituting an independent committee to decide the award. Otherwise, they better give it on their own than going through this formality, said Arora who proposed the name of Majra for the award.
Surjewala, who announced that he will give away the award money to meritorious university students,is in the forefront when it comes to counter the Opposition onslaught in the Assembly. He also handles most questions on behalf of the chief minister in Assembly.
