Noted environmental activist and director-general of Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Sunita Narain, has approached the Gujarat High Court (HC) in connection with a defamation case filed against her by a Vapi-based chemical company in Gujarat. In the case, a magisterial court had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Narain, following which she approached HC.
A bench of the High Court, comprising Justice S G Shah, is expected to hear the petition on Friday.
The issue pertains to an article published in 2011 in a magazine of which Narain is the editor. The firm, United Phosphorous Limited, had filed a defamation suit against Narain and others, contending that the magazine published the allegedly defamatory article without verifying facts.
A magisterial court in Vapi had issued summons to Narain and others in the case. When they did not present themselves before the court, the court issued NBW against them and ordered police to present them before the court on June 12.
