Students protest outside jail,4 held

Allahabad Senior Superintendent of Police Umesh Kumar Srivastava said the protesters had to be chased away as they continued to resort to violence,damaging nearly half-a-dozen vehicles in the process,despite repeated warnings and assurances by the police and the administration. A case of rioting and damaging property has been registered with four arrested protesters — Luv Kush,Gaurav,Piyush and Anand.

While there was,for a brief moment,indication that the violence was the result of the arrest of three student leaders — Dinesh Kumar Yadav,Mukund Lal Maurya and Manoj Yadav — in connection with the pro-reservation agitation on Sunday night,SSP Srivastava,who said their supporters,too,were present outside the jail,dispelled that the violence had anything to do with their agitation.

The three student leaders had been granted bail by a city court on Wednesday.

“We had gathered to receive them. The violence was not related to our agitation,’’ said one of the members of the Samajik Nyay Morcha,the forum that is at the centre of the pro-reservation agitation.

The jail authorities,meanwhile,have also lodged a formal complaint against Mukund Lal Maurya after they recovered a mobile phone from his possession this morning,said Trans-Yamuna Superintendent of Police,Lallan Rai. Jail Superintendent Amrish Gaur could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
