State supports all-India judicial service proposal: CM

CHIEF Minister Prithviraj Chavan said Saturday Maharashtra supports Union government’s ‘All India Judicial Service’ proposal for recruitment of judges in subordinate judiciary.

CHIEF Minister Prithviraj Chavan said Saturday Maharashtra supports Union government’s ‘All India Judicial Service’ proposal for recruitment of judges in subordinate judiciary.

The proposal, which entails creation of an all-India service on lines of the IAS,is expected to help reduce vacancies in judiciary. In December last year,Law Minister Ashwani Kumar reportedly said in Rajya Sabha that seven states were opposed to such a service.

“We have expressed our opinion in favour of the All-India Judicial Service to the Union government. However,we would like the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to come forward with their view on this issue,” Chavan said.

Chavan also supported optional use of Marathi in Bombay High Court. “There should be a provision for conducting process of dispensing justice in the mother tongue of the litigant,” he said.

Chavan, noting that pendency of cases in Maharashtra has reduced in the last two years, said it was still high and spoke of the need to use technology to reduce pendency. “At the same time, alternative dispute redressal mechanisms like mediation and Lok Adalats are also necessary,” Chavan said.

The Chief Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day law conference in Thane. The conference was organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.

As part of the event, several senior judges will present their views Sunday, including Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Abhay Oka of Bombay High Court.
