Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan on Sunday paid tributes to Dr B. R. Ambedkar on the occasion of his 122nd birth anniversary.
Chavan presided over a function to unveil a lifesize statue of Ambedkar at the airport here. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh was also present at the function. The CM later paid tributes at Deekshabhoomi where the Dalit leader had embraced Buddhism in 1956.
A large number of organisations too paid tributes to Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi and at Samvidhan Chowk on the busy Nagpur-Jabalpur road.
Recalling Dr Ambedkars association with Nagpur,Chavan said it was an emotional attachment and therefore he picked up Nagpur for the historic conversion in 1956.
He said an appropriate memorial was being built on the Indu Mill land in Mumbai and the government was seeking necessary clearances from various agencies. Only constructing a memorial was not enough,but we must follow the path shown by him in maintaining peace,harmony and non-violence, he said.
In Nashik,Mayor Yatin Wagh,Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP from Nashik Sameer Bhujbal,Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) MLA Vasant Gite and corporators of the Nashik Municipal Corporation paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar. Busts of Dr Ambedkar were put up in decorated pandals at different squares of the city to mark his birth anniversary.
