The state government has de-affiliated 70 polytechnics so far this year, including one in Mumbai, for poor academic performance. These include 49 non-AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) institutes recognised by Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) and 21 AICTE-approved ones.

“There cannot be fresh admissions at these polytechnics from this year. Due to an ongoing exercise of academic monitoring, infrastructure and other facilities have improved at many institutes,” said MSBTE director P M Khodke.

The monitoring was started last year, when 33 institutes were de-affiliated by MSBTE. It covers faculty profile, infrastructure and other facilities,consultancy/teaching projects, accreditation, libraries and student performance. Fifteen polytechnics have been given time till August 15 to improve standard and comply with rules to avoid de-affiliation. Students have been told to check quality of institutes before seeking admission. Report on institutes inspected have been uploaded on the MSBTE website for the benefit of students and parents.
