The J-K Police on Friday detained several leaders of Hurriyat Conference (M) after they tried to organize a protest rally against the continuous detention of separatist leaders and in favour of abolishing capital punishment.
Soon after the leaders of Hurriyat (M), alongwith its spokesman Shahid-ul-Islam, appeared at the press enclave in the city on early Friday morning, police personnel deployed there swung into action and detained the protesters.
Officials said all the leaders were taken to Kothi Bagh police station, where they are presently detained.
Shouting slogans against capital punishment, the leaders were demanding the release of all the political prisoners in the valley.
A Hurriyat spokesperson said that one of its leaders, Javed Mir, was injured in the police action. “After he was injured in the police action, he was referred to Bone and Joint hospital, where he is undergoing a surgery,” the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the police on Friday prevented people in a South Kashmir town from offering funeral prayers in absentia for Yakub Memon who was hanged in Nagpur jail on Thursday.
