The Madhya Pradesh Police arrested Shahnawazuddin, the younger brother of slain gangster Sohrabuddin, and five others for allegedly carrying illegal weapons and forcing a family in Dharad village in Ratlam district to vacate disputed land.
Shahnawazuddin, who is associated with the ruling BJP, and his accomplices were arrested from the disputed land Monday after three women approached the authorities complaining that armed men had evicted them from their ancestral land.
Police took them in custody after they failed to produce documents to support their claim that the mother of the three sisters had willed the land in Shahnawazuddin’s name. Police said Shahnawazuddin and his accomplices also failed to produce licences of the 12 guns and a pistol they were carrying.
Meanwhile, Shahnawazud-din’s brother and the petitioner in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, Rubabuddin, accused the police of hatching a conspiracy to frame Shahnawazuddin in a bid to put pressure on him to withdraw the appeal, which he was going to file in the Bombay High Court against the acquittal of BJP chief and former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah.
He alleged that the case was lodged at the instance of senior police officials from MP and Gujarat who are among 37 accused in the case.
