Six Punjab Police personnel,including four constables,were killed and 11 injured when a jeep in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree near Lohari village,10-km from Fatehgarh Sahib Monday,police said.
There were 17 police personnel in the jeep and they were on way to Fatehgarh Sahib via Sanghol for participating in weekly parade.
The police said that the vehicle rammed into a roadside tree after the driver lost control of the jeep. In an earlier statement the police had said the accident happened when a truck hit the jeep near Lohari village.
The dead include a head constable,four constables,one of them a woman,and a home guard,police said. The woman constable,Raj Kaur,aged 20,who died in the mishap,hailed from Panjkoha village in Fatehgarh Sahib. All of them were posted at Khamano Police Station.
Eight of the injured were referred to PGI,Chandigarh,for treatment.
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy,Sukhbir Singh Badal,expressed shock over the tragic death of the police personnel. The Chief Minister sanctioned ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh to each bereaved family and Rs 25,000 for the seriously injured.
He also directed the concerned authorities to provide immediate medical treatment to the injured.
