Was missing since May 4,naked body found floating in Bhakra canal.
The naked body of a youth found floating in Bhakra canal in Haryanas Sirsa district May 10 has been identified as that of Chetan Shergill, nephew of renowned Punjabi sufi singer Rabbi Shergill, who had been reported missing from Delhi since May 4,police said Monday.
Chetans family members identified the body late Sunday, police said, adding that the 22-year-old youth had left his Rohini residence and boarded a bus for Punjabi University,Patiala,on May 4. A student of MA in Journalism and Mass Communication,he was to appear for an exam. However,he never reached the university, police said.
As per the preliminary investigations conducted by the Haryana and Punjab police,Chetan instead of getting off the bus near the university, reached the bus stand.
As per his family members,he forgot to pick his bag and boarded another bus for Punjabi University. However,he boarded a wrong bus and reached Sadduwal village in Patiala where, when the conductor asked Chetan for the ticket,he realised that he had left his bag in the other vehicle.
The youth then called his mother from his cellphone and made her talk to conductor. His mother requested the conductor not to charge Chetan for the ticket and that he be allowed to get off the vehicle, a Punjab Police official said, adding, the bus driver and conductor have already been questioned and have given their statement confirming the mothers story.
Said Ashu Malik, who runs a network of divers in Punjab and Haryana,After getting off the bus,Chetan again called his mother informing her that he had missed the exam and asked her to take him back from there. The phone got disconnected and despite repeated attempts, his mother could not reach him. One of the teachers in the university is related to Chetans mother. She approached me and asked for help. The Patiala police also contacted me. My divers found a Samsung Galaxy mobile and spotted a few clothes on the bank of Bhakra canal in Saddowal. I contacted Patiala SSP H S Mann and handed over the phone to him. We suspected that Chetan might have jumped into the canal and committed suicide. His family was contacted. Finally,in the wee hours of May 11,I managed to recover the body from Bhakra canal and informed the Haryana Police, who reached in the morning and claimed the body. Chetans mother identified him.
Malik is generally contacted by the police to fish out bodies from rivers and canals.
Expressing shock over the death of his nephew,Rabbi Shergill said,Chetan left his home for taking his exam,we dont know how he landed in this state. The body was beyond recognition and we barely managed to identify it. We still have doubts, for which we have requested doctors to conduct a DNA examination.
Meanwhile,Sirsa SP Sourabh Singh,said,Prima-facie no foul play is suspected, but we are investigating the matter. We have got the post mortem examination conducted at Rohtaks PGIMS.
