A magistrate’s court in Bandra has remanded Sanjeev Khanna, the former husband of Indrani Mukerjea in police custody till August 31 after investigators said he played an “active role” in abducting and strangulating Sheena Bora.

The Khar police had arrested Indrani Mukerjea on August 25 for her alleged role in the murder of her daughter Sheena. Indrani’s driver Shyam Rai has confessed to the police that he, along with Indrani, murdered Sheena and dumped her body off the Pen-Khopoli highway.

Based on Indrani’s interrogation, the police on Wednesday arrested Khanna, her second husband.

The prosecution said the police wanted to take Khanna to the spot where the trio dumped Bora’s body, doused it with petrol and burned it.

The police have recovered Khanna’s laptop and mobile phones. The police sought Khanna’s custody claiming they are yet to recover the weapons and wanted to interrogate him further and also find if there was involvement of any others in the crime. The police also sought his custody to learn about the sequence of events of the crime and the motive.

Public Prosecutor Laxman Rathod told the court that a detailed investigation was required as it was a case of criminal conspiracy. The court had on Tuesday sent Mukerjea and her driver Rai to police custody till August 31.

When the judge asked Khanna if he had any complaints with the police, Khanna replied in the negative. Throughout the hearing, he wore a white paper shroud covering his face, with holes only near his eyes and mouth.

Opposing his custody, his lawyer S Mithare argued that police had already recorded his statement and he has already been interrogated in the last two days.
Khanna has been booked for murder, abduction, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.

Earlier in the day, his lawyer filed an application to allow Khanna home food and clothing. In the evening, the lawyer withdrew his application.
