Sexual assault charge against Tejpal: Another case of harassment at workplace
Tehelka sexual assault accusation is the latest in the series of sexual harassment allegations at workplace.
Founder and editor-in-chief of weekly magazine Tehelka,Tarun Tejpal,stepped down from the post for six months following the allegations of sexual assault and intimidation from a junior woman colleague.
The Tehelka sexual assault accusation is the latest in the series of sexual harassment allegations at workplace. On Tuesday,a woman lawyer made similar allegations against a very senior lawyer.
Here’s a look at the recent cases of sexual harassment allegations at workplace:
Woman Lawyer: A young woman lawyer,in her blog posted on Legally India on Wednesday,alleged that she was harassed by her senior for long even after she stopped assisting him. The lawyer alleged that the advances made by the senior,who was “old enough to be her father,were not physical but were more of sexual interest.”
Ex-DU employee: A former employee of Delhi University’s Bhim Rao Ambedkar College (BRAC) set herself ablaze in October,as she alleged that she was sexually and mentally harassed by two colleagues. She later succumbed to injuries. 35-year-old Pavitra Bhardwaj,a former lab assistant at BRAC’s geography department,had alleged that she was sexually and mentally harassed by two colleagues.
PhD student: In September,an IIT Guwahati professor was suspended for allegedly sending “unwarranted” messages to a PhD student. 40-year-old Prof Lingaraj Sahoo of IIT Guwahati’s Biotechnology department allegedly sent messages to the PhD scholar. The Women’s Working Committee (WWC) of IIT Guwahati submitted a report saying the professor subjected the student to harassment,mental agony and indignity.
Doordarshan employee: A senior Doordarshan official was suspended in October by Prasar Bharati over charges of sexual harassment. Acting on a complaint against the senior officer by a junior colleague who had accused him of using abusive language and inappropriate behaviour,Doordarshan had set up an inquiry committee. The I&B Ministry also took a serious note of the matter,saying the “inquiry committee is of the view there exists a prima facie case of sexual harassment” and sought that action should be taken as per the procedure laid in the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention,Prohibition and Redressal) Act,2013.
Radio Presenters: Another sexual harassment case came out in light in March when radio presenters employed with a Prasar Bharati-run channel alleged sexual harassment at workplace. The AIR Broadcasting Professionals Association (AIRBPA) filed a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women stating they were facing sexual harassment at AIR FM Gold radio station. The complaint alleged bias and unprofessional behaviour by the programme executives at the radio station and specifically named FM Gold director-general Leela Dhar Mandloi for “attacking the self respect” of the women presenters.
