The Manipur government has ordered that all educational institutions in two districts — Imphal East and West — be closed as a students’ agitation for the implementation of an Inner Line Permit (ILP) picked up steam.
An official notification said all educational institutions — schools, government and private colleges, polytechnic and higher education institutes — will be closed from July 25 to 28.
The notification was issued after students of several colleges and schools clashed with police forces while trying to storm the Assembly building, which was in session, on Thursday. The police said 30 students were injured and about 50 taken in for questioning during the incident.
The agitation has been spearheaded by the students’ wing of the Joint Action Committee on the ILP which, if implemented, will place restrictions on non-Manipuris Indians visiting the state without prior permission.
During Thursday’s incident, the police fired several rounds of teargas shells to bring these students under control. The students retaliated by pelting stones. They later burnt an effigy of CM Okram Ibobi Singh, attacked a passenger bus and blocked the Thangmeiband road.
