SC asks states to set up animal welfare boards

The primary function of the board is to ensure proper implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Centre and state governments to ensure the setting up of a state animal welfare board in every state and a society for prevention of cruelty to animals in every district.

The court ordered that the bodies must become functional within four weeks. The primary function of the board is to ensure proper implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and norms associated with slaughter houses.
