Saudi prince on 3-day India visit; defence pact tops agenda

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s three-day visit starting Wednesday will be marked by India and the Gulf kingdom signing a pact to increase interaction between defence establishments of the two nations, sources said on Tuesday.

The visit of the Crown Prince, who Defence Minister, is likely to cement strategic partnership rolled out during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Saudi Arabia in 2010. This is also the highest level visit to India after that of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s in 2006.

The pact will allow exchange of defence-related information, military training and education as well as cooperation in areas varying from hydrography and security to logistics. The Crown Prince will call on President Pranab Mukherjee and meet Prime Minister Singh and Vice-President Hamid Ansari.
