The seat adjustment formula between the Sanjha Morcha and the Congress for the rural polls worked well and the results are quite satisfying,Morcha convenor Manpreet Singh Badal said Tuesday.
Manpreet, who is also the PPP president, refused to call it an alliance but said,We never campaigned for each other but in fact we had a seat adjustment in the areas where we felt that the other party can perform well.
Sanjha Morcha won more than 50 panchayat samiti and four zila parishad seats as per the results declared Tuesday.
It may be mentioned that parties had entered into a seat adjustment formula for some seats in Mansa,Bathinda,Sangrur,Ropar,Jalandhar and Fatehgarh Sahib districts. In Sangrur, out of 181 panchayat samiti zones, results of 68 had been declared till the time of filing this report in which SAD had won 50 seats while 18 went to Congress and Sanjha Morcha. In Fatehgarh Sahib too the two parties won more than eight panchayat samiti seats.
As for zila parishad elections in Sangrur, out of 10,three seats were bagged by Congress. In Mansa,of 17 panchayat samiti seats,11 went to SAD-BJP and rest to Congress and Sanjha Morcha.
In Bhikhi zone of Mansa, the seat adjustment formula again worked put well as out of 15 block samiti seats,Congress bagged five and the PPP two. eight setas went to the SAD.
However the formula,it seems failed to click in Bathinda, where the candidates of the two Opposition parties could not get even a single seat till the time of filing this report.
Incidentally,Malkiat Singh, the Congresss zila parishad candidate from Bhai rupa zone of Rampura Phul in Bathinda lost the elections to SADs Rajgarh Singh. In the run up to the polls, clashes followed by firing at Adampur village in this zone had claimed a PPP worker while three others were injured.
In Ferozepur, despite allaged firing and attack on party MLA Rana Sodhi,Congress could not open its account. All the seats in Mamdot and Guruharsahai were won by the ruling party and result of a few seats were pending till the time of filing this report.
Asked, whether he will use the same formula in next years Lok Sabha elections too,Manpreet said,It is too early to comment. But I am satisfied with the performance and I believe that our seat adjustment formula gave us a good result. We had chosen only a few zones (for seat adjustment).
He,however, added that the results are all the more satisfactory as the wins came despite large scale booth rigging and threats to our candidates.
The election commission must verify all the complaints of booth capturing and rigging so as to find out the truth, he added.
