In yet another case of the sand mafia flexing its muscles,a police team was attacked in a Ferozepur village on Tuesday night.

A police team led by ASI Darshan Singh and his team was attacked in Sadhushah village when they stopped a tractor trolley carrying sand and asked the driver his name. The alleged attackers — Gurjant Singh,Jarnail Singh Sandeep Singh — damaged the police vehicle with a baseball bat and fired in the air. They snatched the sand trolley and even threatened the police team with dire consequences. An FIR under Section 307 was registered against the trio, but no arrest has been made so far.

A similar incident was reported under Kulgari police station some 10 days back and a FIR under Section 307 was registered when about 10-12 persons attacked at police party after they allegedly caught them with illegal sand trolleys. No one has been arrested.

In Zira constituency of Ferozepur also a similar incident was reported a fortnight back but apart from registration of FIR for attempt to murder,no action has been taken.

With three incidents in a fortnight, and no substantive results, the police inaction is also under the scanner. ASI Darshan Singh, who sustained some injuries last night, said,“when I tried to stop the sand trolley, another white car came from behind. Gurjant and Jarnail were sitting in that car. They damaged our vehicle and even manhandled the staff. Later Sandeep Singh fired in the air and took away the trolley after threatening to kill us.”

Things are no different in other districts too. Two months back a Ludhiana police employee got his leg fractured because the trolley driver carrying sand did not stop when asked to do so.

Police employees said on condition of anonymity that they try hard not to get posted in the mining areas because the mafia does not think twice before attacking anyone in uniform.

However,SSP Ferozepur Manminder Singh, when contacted, said,“there is no mafia active in Ferozepur at least. Groups of villagers at times gather when they see police employees. There have been no large scale incidents,two-three incidents which have happened recently, are being investigated and we are looking for the persons involved.”
