Mayor Sunil Prabhu on Tuesday cleared his party leader Uddhav Thackeray’s proposal to convert the Mahalaxmi Race Course into a theme park. The decision sparked a ruckus at the BMC general body meeting with opposition parties demanding a debate on the proposal before it is approved.

Prabhu said,“A decision has been taken to convert the BMC-owned land in the Race Course into a park.”

The BMC cannot unilaterally decide on Race Course’s future because it owns only 2.54 lakh sq m of the total 8.5 lakh sq m land. The remaining land belongs to the state government’s urban development department.

An official in the Chief Minister’s Office said,“The government is not in favour of tampering with the Race Course. About 6 lakh sq m belongs with the state’s urban development department.” CM Prithviraj Chavan, who holds the urban development portfolio, can exercise his powers to reject the BMC proposal. Earlier, the Mayor urged BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte against extending the lease of Race Course which expired on May 31. The ruling Shiv Sena-BJP combine in the BMC wants the government to develop the Race Course into a theme park.
