On the BJP’s foundation day, former chief minister and party vice-president Uma Bharati Sunday had a tough time establishing that she was not withdrawing from Jhansi. Fighting illness and what she called “the dirty tricks department of the UPA”, she slammed the media for speculating over her plight and intentions.

“Don’t be so inhuman and insensitive,’’ she told the media that gathered at her residence here, a day after she had barred any reporter from getting in. The former chief minister had rushed to Bhopal late on Friday and speculation followed her that she would withdraw from the contest. She had found herself in similar condition recently when a fake letter said she was interested in contesting from Bhopal.

While she blamed a “very senior BJP leader from MP” for the Bhopal plant, she gave a clean chit to the national leadership over Jhansi and instead alleged the UPA was behind planting such stories.

“Don’t you ever fall sick on duty?,’’ she said, accusing journalists of lapping up canard about her without challenging them.

“Have I committed dacoity that I owe an explanation to you,’’ the angry leader said before giving a detailed account of how she walked in heat for 4 km after filing her nomination and how she had to divert the helicopter to Bhopal. She said she was keeping fit for the last few years and had told the party that she would not like to contest any election for a year, but accepted the party’s decision to field her from Jhansi.
