The Gurdaspur MP arrived on the Swaran Shatabdi from New Delhi at 1.30 pm and headed towards Golden Temple to pay obeisance.

The newly appointed president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee,Partap Singh Bajwa, arrived in Amritsar Saturday to a rousing reception from thousands of party workers and supporters. The Gurdaspur MP arrived on the Swaran Shatabdi from New Delhi at 1.30 pm and headed towards Golden Temple to pay obeisance.

Such was the rush to receive Bajwa, that it took the leader more than 30 minutes to leave the station as his supporters presented bouquets, showered flowers and garlanded him.

The entire Congress leadership from Majha including sitting MLAs and prominent Congress leaders were in attendance to welcome Bajwa as were a number of Congress MLAs and leaders from Malwa and Doaba.

Known as Majha Express for his firebrand style of politics,Bajwa is the fourth Congress leader from Majha in to have been appointed party chief after Partap Singh Kairon,Raghunandan Lal Bhatia and Santokh Singh Randhawa.

Former PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh,Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Sunil Jakhar and senior party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Brar were among those who were conspicuous by their absence.

The route from the railway station to Golden Temple was divided in zones by Congress leaders to welcome Bajwa where party leaders representing different constituencies in Majha welcomed Bajwa on his way to the shrine.

En route Golden Temple,Bajwa alternated between travelling in his vehicle and walking. After paying obeisance,he went on to Jallianawala Bagh. “It is a great day for me and my party workers as Jallianwala Bagh is a place of pilgrimage for us,” Bajwa wrote in the Jallianawala Bagh visitors book.

Bajwa was welcomed at Beas Railway station by Congress leader Jasbir Singh Dimpa and his supporters. Malwa Congress leaders who were present also included Kuljit Singh Nagra.

Hits out at Badal for ‘Akali blood’ remark

The newly appointed PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa Saturday took strong exception to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s remarks in Vidhan Sabha, where he reportedly said that late Satnam Singh Bajwa, father of Partap Singh Bajwa, had been an Akali leader and was a friend of Badal and that ‘Akali blood’ ran in PPCC chief.

Talking at Jallianwala Bagh,Bajwa said Badal “should think before he speaks”,accusing Badal of “selective memory loss”.

Bajwa said Badal himself fought his first election in 1957 on the Congress ticket with a pair of Ox as his party symbol. “Badal’s daughter is married to Kairon family (of senior Congress leader and former Punjab chief minister Partap Singh Kairon). Bikram Singh Majithia’s grandfather Surjit Singh Majithia was Deputy Minister of Defence in (Jawaharlal) Nehru’s regime,” Bajwa said, adding that “Badal nu pehlan aapni peeri thale sota pherna chahida hai (Badal should first check his own credentials)”.
