Even as medical teams as well as officials from other departments are on toes in flood-affected villages of Muktsar,Ferozepur and Fazilka, officials are facing difficulties in distributing ration in these areas.
The problem has arisen as though a few houses were affected by floods in most of the villages, the sarpanchs want rations for the entire village. This is a common hurdle the nodal officers are facing in Muktsar villages.
Sources revealed that in village Dohak,as per official figure only 70 houses were affected, but two days ago the village sarpanch refused to accept the ration as he demanded that the whole village must be given ration, not just 70 of them. However, the villagers said that though only 70 houses were damaged by the floods, all of them are facing commuting problem,so they too deserve the ration.
Following the protest,a fresh survey was ordered to assess the damage.
Besides this, flow of canal water from one district to the other was yet another problem. According to available information,to avoid entry of water in Fazilka the farmers had blocked the eastern canal water towards Fazilka, because villagers of Attari and adjoining areas were pumping out water in sem nallah, which was further putting water in the canal going through Fazilka. This water was today diverted through another sem nallah, sources said.
Special Chief secretary to Chief Minister KJS Cheema today visited several flood-hit villages Dohak,Rode,Shherwali,Udaikaran and many others and listened to the villagers problems. Majority were seen complaining about the inadequate delivery of ration, while officials maintained that it was being distributed after every four days in sufficient quantity. Cheema directed the officials to look into the problems of the villagers.
Sources, meanwhile, revealed that in most of the villages, sarpanchs wanted ration for the whole village to maintain a cordial relation with all of them. The nodal officers were giving ration to only those whose houses were under water.
Meanwhile, the Gidderbaha Congress MLA Amarinder Raja Warring and District Congress Committee president Gurdas Girdhar alleged: Ration was being distributed only in the areas with SAD supporters. Udaikaran is a Congress-dominated area, which is at the receiving end with help reaching the least.
Girdhar added: Apart from this, even Model Town area near Udaikaran is under water and its residents are camping at Indoor Stadium of Muktsar, where ration is being distributed by Congress workers and a few religious organisations, rather than the government.
Cheema, however, said that about 45,000 families were being given ration in Muktsar district alone.
