Ram Temple is not a political issue, was never BJP’s political agenda: Rajnath Singh

Singh today reached Amritsar to attend Punjab BJP executive committee meet to prepare for 2014 Lok Sabha polls

BJP National President Rajnath Singh today said that Hindutva “was never the political agenda” of the BJP and that “Ram Temple was not an election issue, nor a political issue” for BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. Singh said BJP would go into 2014 polls with development agenda.

He today reached Amritsar to attend Punjab BJP executive committee meet to prepare for 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The two day meet began today. Responding to media queries relating to BJP general secretary Amit Shah raking up the Ram Temple issue where he said he had prayed for the construction of grand Ram Temple soon during his visit to makeshift temple

at the disputed site in Ayodhya on Saturday,Singh said,“Issue should not be unnecessarily politicized.” He added that issues was a “national issue” sub judice and “we should wait for Supreme Court judgment on the issue”.

He invoked a Supreme Court “definition” to state that Hindutva was a way of life. Singh said “religion cannot be made a political agenda.” “Hindutva cannot be limited to any caste, sect or religion boundary,” Singh said. He said as per information with him Shah had just expressed “his wish” for construction of grand Ram Temple. Singh said a Hindu would obviously want a temple,a Muslim a mosque,a Christian a church and a Sikh a gurdwara. Singh said Shah had not tried to make it (Ram Temple) issue as political or election issue. Singh said BJP was for the “eternal principle” where there should not be any discrimination with human beings. Responding to a query,Singh said question of bickering in the NDA alliance partners did not arise on the issue, reiterating that Ram Temple was not a political issue. He was all praise for Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal when he said where leaders like Badal are there, that alliance remained united.

Rajnath Singh slammed UPA government on the issue of internal and external security saying that UPA did not have the “strong will power and firm conviction” to deal with the security issues. Singh said UPA had no comprehensive action plan to deal with the challenge.

Singh accused UPA to pit CBI and IB against each other for its “political purpose”.

On a query relating to Amritsar Member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had been absent from the political scene for long after being allegedly sidelined by party,Singh said he was not aware whether Sidhu was participating in the meet or not and added Sidhu met him four to five days back. Singh said Sidhu was a talented party leader and party would make use of his services appropriately.

After landing at Amritsar Airport,Rajnath Singh paid obeisance at Golden Temple, visited Jallianwala Bagh and went to Durgiana Temple to pay obeisance. He was accompanied by Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
