The “ragda dance”, highlight of the separatist street protests in 2008 and 2010, returned to Srinagar on Tuesday during Congress protests against the suspension of MPs. Party members assembled at the Srinagar headquarters and danced to the beats of Ragda, ragda, Modi ragda.

The “ragda dance”, an innovation by separatist leader Masarat Alam, first came up during the 2008 Amarnath land agitation, an example that was soon followed by several mainstream political parties.

“The decision of the Speaker is undemocratic, against the basic contours of the Constitution,” Congress state president G A Mir said, before police detained noisy demonstrators.

Last month, workers at a National Conference rally led by former chief minister Omar Abdullah — who had himself been the target of this dance when in power — stomped their feet to Ragda, ragda, Mufti ragda.
