To provide better irrigation facility to people in the state,the Punjab government has decided to spend Rs 2,700 crore on renovation and cleaning of drains. A state government spokesperson said on Wednesday that the step would also facilitate conservation of groundwater level. Under the scheme,Rs 1,500 crore will be spent on Sirhind Feeder,Rs 250 crore on Kandi canal and Rs 211 crore on Bist Doab Canal. Apart from it,400 deep wells were being installed in the state for irrigation,of which 280 will be installed in Kandi region.
Free computer training for SC youth
The Punjab government has decided to initiate a year-long basic computer training and Punjabi and English stenography to graduates belonging to scheduled castes for free. Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike on Wednesday said that the training will be imparted in Mohali,Amritsar,Ferozepur and Patiala for the 2013-14 session. The minister said the applicant had to be below 30 years.
BJP announces state office bearers
BJP Kisan Morcha state chief Jatinder Atwal on Wednesday announced the list of the state office bearers. Gurmail Singh Saran (Moga),Charanjeet Singh Randhawa (Gurdaspur),Dhanantar Singh (Mansa),Harwinder Singh (Hoshiarpur) and Ranjeet Singh Kahlon (Gurdaspur) have been appointed vice-presidents,while Dr Ashwani Rana (Ropar) and Jaswant Singh Sandhu (Muktsar) were named general secretaries.
‘Will check nefarious activities at border’
M F Farooqui,who took charge as BSF DIG in Amritsar,on Wednesday said he would work to create a second line of defense in the form of residents of border villages to check cross border smuggling from Pakistan and other nefarious activities taking place at the border. Farooqui,who took over from J S N D Prasad,added that emphasis would be laid on having orientation sessions for people to end the tendency of demand and subsequently check drug smuggling.
Law university launches new course
The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL),Punjab,has started its 8th academic session from its newly set campus in Sidhuwal village (Patiala). Besides this,one year Master of Laws (LLM) course is all set to be launched from the current session with intake of 40 students per year. Disclosing this here on Wednesday,an official spokesman said that the University was running a BA (LLB) five year course with an intake of 120 students per year. From the present session,it has also started LLM course.
