The Punjab government on Friday sought special package from the Centre for the growth of industry in the state. In a written communication to Union Industry and Commerce Minister Anand Sharma,Punjab Industry and Commerce Minister Anil Joshi appealed to the UPA government to immediately grant an economic package to provide a much needed impetus to the stagnant industrial sector in Punjab. Joshi also sought time from Sharma for a personal meeting to apprise him the gloomy industrial scenario. Disbanding of freight equalisation policy,non-setting up of major public sector industrial projects and its coastal dislocation are the major bottlenecks in the path of industrial growth in Punjab, Joshi said, reiterating that the Union governments tax concessions for neighbouring states has led to an unwarranted flight of industry from Punjab to these states. Punjab is the victim of circumstances,as the long stretch of militancy in the state has adversely effected its overall growth… Punjab being a land locked state, shares international border with a hostile neighbour and practically has no access to international markets, he added.
