Punjab govt bans outside eatables in jails

The Punjab government has imposed a complete ban on eatables and other items brought by visitors for prisoners from outside,Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said on Tuesday while presiding over a high-level meeting of senior officials,jail superintendents and doctors posted in jails.

The Punjab government has imposed a complete ban on eatables and other items brought by visitors for prisoners from outside,Jail Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur said on Tuesday while presiding over a high-level meeting of senior officials,jail superintendents and doctors posted in jails.

At the same time,the minister also directed the jail authorities to make available every essential item for the inmates in canteens within the jail premises. The jail superintendent will be held responsible if any objectionable material is supplied from outside.

Referring to the frequent deaths of inmates in jails,Phillaur has asked the doctors posted in prisons to ensure best possible healthcare to patients. “A committee comprising jail superintendent ,medical officer of the jail and civil surgeon has been constituted to identify the psychiatrist,pediatrician,gynecologist and other specialists’ to be on the panel of the jail department,” said Phillaur. Besides,ECG machines will be installed in jails.

Concerned over problems being faced by prison staff in handling the nexus between drug peddlers and prisoners,the minister said: “The superintendents will have the power to search the prisons.”
