A day after Punjab IAS officer Kahan Singh Pannu was assaulted by some stranded pilgrims in Uttarakhand, his colleagues back home demanded a probe into the incident alleging that the attack seemed premeditated and conspiratorial.
The demand came even as the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, terming the assault on Pannu as deplorable called upon his Uttarakhand counterpart to ensure adequate security for the relief and rehabilitation parties. The Punjab Police,DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, said was already probing into what led to the incident. This came, sources said, after Badal directed Saini to conduct the probe.
Earlier, president of the Punjab IAS Officers Association,Sarvesh Kaushal,in a representation to the Badal and his deputy demanded that those who attacked Pannu must not go unpunished. State government should take up the matter with Uttarakhand for lodging an FIR and entrusting the investigation to a special investigation team after completing the rescue operations, the association said.
Condemning the brutal attack, the association said Pannu has informed that the attack was unprovoked and pre-meditated,and perhaps the outcome of some conspiracy. According to him,the group verified his identity, and when they were sure that he was K S Pannu, they pounced upon him, it said, adding that one of the attackers recorded the whole incident and uploaded it on social networking sites.
The association said that by deciding to resume his duties within an hour of his brutal manhandling,Pannu had set a great example.
Meanwhile, the state Congress too condemned the attack. PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa said the very fact that somebody in the mob video graphed the assault on IAS officer and uploaded it,indicates towards a deep rooted conspiracy to humiliate and harass Pannu. He said that incident was shameful and blot on the face of SAD-BJP government. Bajwa rued that the Punjab cabinet, which met at Chandigarh on Monday didnt take notice of the assault on its officer.
