A probe has been ordered into the death of 63-year-old Mehmoodan, a riot victim who died in Shahpur, Muzaffarnagar, on Thursday.
The woman’s body was buried without getting an autopsy conducted. Her family claimed she had died due to severe cold. She was staying in a makeshift hutment for about two months ever since the government-run relief camp in Shahpur was closed down.
Saharanpur commissioner Bhuvnesh Kumar said he has ordered a probe and sought a report from the Muzaffarnagar district magistrate.
A resident of Kangara village, Mehmoodan and her family had left their house and shifted to Shahpur relief camp on September 8, a day after communal violence broke out in Muzaffarnagar.
Mehmoodan’s grandson Mohammad Zakir said, “She complained she was feeling cold at night. We lit a fire, but she died early Thursday morning.”
Meanwhile, Mohammad Umar, a 35-year-old who was staying in a relief camp in Shamli’s Kairana area, died Saturday. The district administration said he was suffering from a liver disease.
According to a Press Trust of India report, a 15-day-old baby also died of the cold in the Malakpur camp in Shamli, while a woman, Shanno, gave birth to a stillborn child, reportedly due to absence of proper medical care there.
