Praising the functioning of the 16th Lok Sabha, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday expressed satisfaction over the fact that the Lower House had assumed its role and responsibilities in right earnest.
While addressing a special session of the Uttarakhand assembly on Monday, Mukherjee said, “Till now, the 16th Lok Sabha has sat for 90 days and passed 55 government bills; 24 bills were passed in the just-concluded fourth session.
Further, the House sat late for 55 hours and 19 minutes in the fourth session to transact urgent government business. Seven hours and 4 minutes were sadly lost due to interruptions and forced adjournments. This is less than in many previous sessions”.
A noteworthy feature of the current Lok Sabha was the number of first-time parliamentarians — 318 — said Mukherjee, adding that the time spent on debates and discussions in the House has gone up considerably.
“I am particularly happy the Constitution Amendment Bill related to the Land Boundary Agreement between India and Bangladesh was passed unanimously by both houses of Parliament,” he added.
