Security guards wrote Mai Chor Hun (I am a thief) on pieces of paper and pinned them to chests of three suspected thieves in Satna, one of them said to be an engineering college student. They were tied to a tree and made to spend the whole night in the cold before police took them in custody on Tuesday morning, it has come to light.
The three have been arrested and the four guards have been booked for wrongful confinement.
PowerGrid Corporation guards caught the three allegedly attempting to steal copper wires after midnight. Four others escaped. The guards beat them up and tied them to a tree waiting for police to arrive. “The local media reached the company in the morning and informed us,” said in-charge of Nagod Police Station Sarika Pande.
She claimed the police were not informed, while the company said despite being alerted at night they did not turn up. The police claimed the suspects are aged between 20 and 22 while the local media said two of them are younger.
Four security guards have been booked for wrongful confinement and causing hurt to youths, among other charges. The police said arrests, if any, would follow after investigation.
SP Satna K C Jain told The Indian Express that police arrested the three youths and registered a case against the security guards. He denied the allegation that police did not reach on time. The state human rights commission said it would take cognisance of human rights violations on Wednesday.
