Uttarakhand Police on Wednesday said the post-mortem report of the seven-year-old girl, whose body was found in Haldwani on Tuesday, has suggested that she was raped. The death has sparked protests in Haldwani, Pithoragarh and Almora towns as police have failed to make any arrests in the case. “The postmortem report suggests she was raped before death,” Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) R S Meena told The Indian Express over phone from Haldwani where he has been camping.
Meena said five teams have been constituted to solve the case. A team of forensic experts are also helping the investigators. Sources in the police said a team has been sent to Bihar after they questioned everyone present at the reception. The girl and her family members had come to Haldwani town on November 20. The same evening, the girl had gone missing. After five days of intensive search operation, police recovered the girl’s body from a forest area in Haldwani on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, most of the business establishments and educational institutes in Haldwani town remained closed on Wednesday to protest the death. Till the filing of the report, locals, including the girl’s father, were sitting on a dharna demanding immediate arrest in the case. The family has not yet received the body.
