It will be a testing time the main Opposition Indian National Lok Dal and Haryana Janhit Congress-Bharatiya Janta Party alliance in Haryana as seven districts go for Municipal Corporation polls June 2 even as some political experts have expressed doubt whether the elections will be held on the said date.
The demarcation of wards has been done on the basis of 2001 census and if challenged in a court, the polls may be stalled for the time being, experts said. The seven MCs were made created than three years ago and the Deputy Commissioners were designated as MC Commissioners. If the elections do take place,it will be the first ever for these seven MCs.
The MC elections are scheduled to be held at Ambala,Panchkula,Karnal,Panipat,Hisar,Rohtak and Yamunanagar - all considered Congress strongholds.
While the HJC-BJP have already announced that they will be contesting the polls separately under their respective party flags.
BJPs senior leader Ram Bilas Sharma said,BJP will be contesting the MC elections in Haryana on the party symbol. Though we have an alliance with the Haryana Janhit Congress, but the candidates of both the parties will be contesting separately. Our basic aim is to defeat Congress and we are sure this time.
HJC chief Kuldeep Bishnoi has already also announced that it will be free for all MC elections as far as his party is concerned. Bishnoi made it clear that the HJC candidates will not be restricted and any number of candidates can contest from one Municipal Corporation. Constitution of our party, which was drafted by Chaudhary Bhajan Lal,does not allow a candidate to contest any election below the level of MLA on the party symbol. We shall not be taking any disciplinary action against any of our partys candidates if they contest from the same MC. For instance, even if three-four candidates of HJC contest from one MC seat,it will be fine with us.
INLD has also declared that the party will contest the elections on its symbol. We are positive and sure that we will win all the seven municipal corporations. If Congress candidates contest on their party symbol, they will definitely loose, said Abhay Chautala, senior INLD leader.
Corruption vs Corruption
While the ruling State Congress will be hitting out at INLD on party president Om Prakash Chautalas conviction (in JBT recruitment scam),the INLD is set to target the ruling party on corruption cases involving Union ministers. Its going to be a tough contest for HJC and BJP as well. Even thought they parties have announced their alliance is unbreakable, their candidates campaigning against each other in MC polls are bound to affect the partys alliance in the long run. Issues of corruption, civic amenities including water and electricity supply, deteriorating law and order, atrocities on Dalits and other infrastructure related problems will dominate in the MC polls.
