Hours after imposing an exemplary cost of Rs 5 lakh on the Maharashtra government for delay in filing an affidavit on police reforms,Supreme Court (SC) withdrew its order Monday saying the state had done better than many others.
SC changed its order after perusing the affidavits of Rajasthan,Haryana,Uttar Pradesh,Andhra Pradesh and Goa.
A bench headed by justice G S Singhvi said Maharashtra has done better than other states and saddling it with heavy cost was not necessary. Earlier in the day,SC said some states were taking its directions very lightly and it had become a habit for them to delay affidavits. The court made it clear it was not for state governments to extend deadlines.
