Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls,a war of words began between the Opposition and the ruling side on Tuesday with senior BJP leader L K Advani predicting that people would recognise the “hand” responsible for price rise, farmer suicides, economic crisis and Satyam fraud.

“The time is coming when people will recognise the hand that made price rise possible, the hand that made farmers commit suicides, the hand that made the economy as bad as it is now,the hand that made the Satyam-Maytas scandal possible,” the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate said.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had in his budget speech yesterday spoke of the ‘hand’ that can help the nation,in an obvious reference to the election symbol of Congress.

Advani was participating in the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President for her address which saw senior Congress member V Kishore Chandra Deo telling the BJP bluntly that the issue of terrorism would not sell and that the UPA’s prospects of returning to power were bright.

“The mandate of Delhi is the mandate of the country,” he said referring to the Congress emerging victorious in the national capital, saying it is a microcosm of the nation. The results of Delhi assembly polls were a rejection of the terrorism issue and the politics of hatred,he said.

Advani, who is the Leader of the Opposition, was caustic on the Congress-led coalition accusing it of misusing the institutions, may it be the CBI,the Election Commission and even Parliament.

In such a scenario, one feels like praying “God help us” but whenever the nation is in crisis, the people have always “saved” it,Advani said, seeking to debunk Congress claims that it was going to the elections with a “basketful of achievements”.

The speeches of Deo,as also Congress chief whip Madhusudan Mistry, saw attack on the BJP for practising politics of “division” and telling the saffron party that terrorism is a national issue which is needed to be dealt with in a united manner.

“Vote cannot be sought or bought on the bodies of slain people,” Deo said initiating the discussion.

Mistry said policies of the UPA government over the past five years reflected Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of empowering rural India.

Not many members and ministers were present in the House during the discussion. Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee,Advani and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present in the House.
