A month after Patiala mayor Jaspal Singh Pradhan resigned over his alleged role in the murder of a married woman,the government announced that the city will get a new mayor on April 2.
Currently senior deputy mayor Jagdish Rai Chaudhary is officiating as the mayor of the corporation. Former mayor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli is among the front-runners for the post. He has the support of majority of SAD councillors.
Meanwhile the special investigation team (SIT) constituted to probe the alleged murder of the 28-year-old married woman Parampreet Kaur is yet to question Pradhan on his role in the case. The chairperson of the SIT,IG,Shashi Prabha Diwedi said several attempts to make Pradhan join the investigations had failed. “The former mayor has gone underground and we will have to resort to pressure to ensure his presence for questioning. Investigations into the rest of the case is almost done but we cannot submit a final report till we question Pradhan,” she said.
The other two accused —- victim’s husband Harpreet Singh and her mother-in-law Paramjit Kaur —- were arrested by the police and are in judicial remand.
Sources said that following a fight,Harpreet,in a fit of rage allegedly strangled Parampreet with her dupatta and tried to make it look like a suicide. He allegedly tried to hang her body from a fan but failed. His mother too allegedly tried to help him get away with the crime. The mayor’s role in the incident is still not clear,add sources. However,he did try his best to force the family of the victim not to insist on getting a post mortem done.
