The gang duped two city-based doctors and a few banks in Chandigarh and had been staying here in a rented accommodation for around six years.

Himachal cops nab accomplice Mohit Sharma,‘lecturer in city govt college’

A Palampur-based woman Pooja Sharma, who claimed to be a Himachal Pradesh cadre IAS officer, and her four accomplices who are in the dock for having duped numerous people to the tune of lakhs of rupees, have a city connection.

The gang duped two city-based doctors and a few banks in Chandigarh and had been staying here in a rented accommodation for around six years.

While Pooja claimed to be a recently recuited IAS officer, her accomplice Mohit used to claim he was a lecturer in Chandigarh’s prominent government college.

The gang, comprising five people including Pooja and Mohit, allegedly duped various people in Chandigarh,Ludhiana,Solan and Una districts of Himachal Pradesh. While the Palampur police has arrested Mohit, and three residents of Una district—Subhash Chand,Rakesh Kumar and Rulia Ram—Pooja is yet to be arrested.

Pooja and Mohit had rented the first floor of a house in Sector 11 about six years ago. The house owner had to finally move the court for their eviction.

The present owner of the house,Colonel (retd) Karamjit Singh, told Newsline that he suspected Pooja from the day he met her.

“I knew that there was something wrong with her version but she insisted that she was an IAS officer. We learnt about her fake claims when she refused to vacate the house and we had to move court against her. In fact, she used to move in a Ford Ikon car, with a red light atop. We started getting visitors at our house, looking for her, whom she had allegedly cheated,” he said.

Another of Pooja’s alleged victims is an oncologist,Rajiv Bedi, posted at a prominent private hospital in Mohali. The doctor was allegedly duped of Rs 45 lakh by Pooja, when she allegedly lured him to purchase a land in Palampur on the pretext of opening a nursing college there. She took money from him and handed him fake documents of the land.

When the doctor learnt of the fraud,he lodged a complaint with the Himachal police,on the basis of which a case was registered against Pooja and others. The HP police then constituted a Special Investigating Team.

“For many days now,we are receiving notices from the banks, from where Pooja’s accomplice Mohit had got certain credit cards made. They used the credit cards and made purchases worth lakhs of rupees, and never repaid the banks, for which the notices are landing at our house now,” Singh said.

“While we have already arrested four people, including Mohit Sharma,Pooja had moved court for her anticipatory bail. Her application has been listed for hearing on Monday. In case her bail application is rejected,we shall launch a hunt to nab her. Once she is nabbed, more details are likely to surface,” said Sanjeev Walia, one of the investigating officials.

UT’s ‘failure’,Himachal’s catch

Colonel (retd) Karamjit Singh said he had informed Chandigarh Police a year ago about Pooja Sharma using a red light atop her Ford Ikon car. “I told the police that she had been claiming that she was an IAS officer. The police reached our residence, saw the car with the red light but failed to question Pooja Sharma. The only thing which the police did was issue her a challan for unauthorisedly using red light atop the vehicle, without a valid permit.”
