Orissa suspends operation in 128 mines

With the multi-crore mining scam likely to raise storm in the winter session of Orissa assembly,the state government has suspended operation in 128 mines located in different districts,official sources said.

With the multi-crore mining scam likely to raise storm in the winter session of Orissa assembly,the state government has suspended operation in 128 mines located in different districts,official sources said.

“We have ordered suspension of mining activities in 128 mines on charge of violation of laws under forest and environment clerance,non-renewal of mining permission and others”,Steel and Mines Secretary Ashok Dalwai said.

Stating that about 50 of the 128 mines were iron ore and mangenese mines,Dalwai said the action was taken after unearthing illegal operation of mines by violation of rules.

Of the 128 mines,50 per cent were located in mineral-rich Keonjhar and Sundergarh districts while stray cases were also reported in Angul,Sambalpur and Mayurbhanj districts,the sources said.

Dalwai said instructions have been issued to the Director and Deputy Directors of Mines (DDMs) and Mining Officers (MOs) to strictly adhere to rules and procedures while allowing mining operations by the lessees.

Violation in mines sector were more common under provision of rule 24 (A),(6) of the Mineral Concession Rule (MCR),1960.
