The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), which elected its new central committee this weekend, has rejected BJP’s claims that several top leaders of the students’ outfit would soon join the saffron party.
“State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharyya appears to have launched a conspiracy against AASU. His claim that some top AASU leaders are joining BJP is baseless,” said AASU’s outgoing advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya.
Siddhartha Bhattacharyya last Monday had said that several top AASU leaders would join his party during BJP president Amit Shah’s visit to Assam in April and hinted that AASU’s outgoing president Sankar Prasad Roy and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi will join BJP.
Meanwhile, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) said their doors were always open for AASU leaders. “The AGP’s doors are always open for AASU leaders who are retiring from active student politics. The student body has a responsibility towards AGP because the regional party was born in 1985 of the historic five-year long movement led by AASU,” said AGP president Atul Bora, who served as AASU president in the late 1980s.
