NGO Forum for Fairness in Education has sent a notice to secretary of the medical education department threatening to file a contempt petition in Bombay High Court (HC) for allegedly not complying with a Supreme Court (SC) order regarding admission to private medical and dental colleges.

In the order on May 8 last year,SC had set guidelines regarding admission to medical and dental courses. It said if all-India quota seats in a college are vacant,it should inform the state government and allot seats strictly on merit. SC said “no college shall fill seats in any other manner”.

Forum for Fairness in Education president Jayant Jain said the judgment applied to all colleges but medical education department secretary Iqbal Singh Chahal issued a corrigendum on July 4 last year excluding private unaided colleges. He claimed the corrigendum “was in total violation of the apex court orders”.

His notice, sent through lawyer Siddharth Murarka, claims there was “ex-facie arbitrariness and favouritism in granting admissions to the dental and medical students”.
