With an eye on elections next year, the state government has decided to extend the slum rehabilitation scheme.

Now,people who began living in slums after January 1,1995,will also be eligible for rehabilitation, only that the structures they are occupying should have been built before the cut-off date.

Replying to a debate on Mumbai in the Legislative Assembly Friday,Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the government had decided to treat the present occupants of slum structures in existence before 1995 as eligible for rehabilitation.

“Since this policy will increase the number of people eligible for rehabilitation,it will ensure speedy redevelopment. The number of previously ineligible slum-dwellers holding back redevelopment will reduce,” he said.
